This is one of four pictures of a large Rashaida encampment near Kassala in Eastern Sudan in the early 1980s. Kassala is close to the Eritrean border, an area which is now completely out of bounds to visitors. The Rashaida are nomads who move across Eastern Sudan, Eritrea and the Arabian peninsula. They are renowned for their camel breeding, the women for their spectacular silver jewellery.
The picture features brightly dressed Rashaida women and children collecting water from a desert pool while thirsty camels drink nearby. The original coloured slide has been transferred onto canvas and mounted on a wooden frame with gilt trim. It is a high quality product, very professionally produced in the USA with the latest technology (in the 1980s). The gilt trim has a few scratches, not clearly visible when the picture is hanging on a wall.
All four framed pictures of this Rashaida encampment are for sale. I can offer a discounted price for the purchase of two or more. Savings will be made on postage too. Please get in touch if you are interested.
