Carl Alm was a hippie famous psychedelic artist and beloved member of my family. My mom and him dated for 10 years before he passed away unexpectedly. He was all about spreading love and art for a good almost 30 years of his life. He traveled the country (mostly northeast) selling band related posters that documented his experiences and features people he met along the way. When he wasn’t wearing a sparkly cape and slinging art, he was home with us playing with his grandkids and helping my mother care for my grandma. He was so much to my family and we are all having a very hard time coping with this.. life is u fair. One thing that helps is trying to explore new ways to share his art. It helps us feel closer to him as we know he would be smiling down on our mission of keeping his legacy alive.
I wish I thought of this years ago. He accumulated so many damaged posters from his travels, mostly just roughed up edges. I’ve been using these posters to make hula hoops to display his art.
I am quite impressed with this one... It’s easier to cut up a very chaotic design poster and spiral it on a hoop, but I did not think I would be able to preserve the story on some of these story telling posters. But I found a way! I cut strips of the poster to capture rows of the scenes and then wrap them in about 1.5” segments which get clear protection tape over them to protect the paper poster. A colored gaffers tape is then put in the space between poster segments to protect the edges, add color contrast, and grip.
I’m still trying to assess how long it takes from start to finish as I make more, but it was quite a process... I spent a good few hours making it but I’m hoping I can cut that down with practice.
I’m confident that I could do this to other popular story telling posters including the Beatles one (Welcome to Pepperland), and the Moe song poster one. If one of these catches your interest please ask, eventually I’ll make a demo and create a listing.
**please give me all size details in order comments. By default I will make a fairly large hoop... 3/4 HDPE 36” od***
