You can recognize it by its bouquet of wrinkled, rich green, red, and bronze leaves and brightly colored stems.
The colorful stems and leaves grow upright and tall from a dense rosette. Ribbed stems in various colors, including gold, pink, orange, purple, red, and candy cane striped variations. Rainbow Swiss chard is available year-round.
Botanical name Beta vulgaris often referred to as leaf beet. They contain the compound betalain, which acts as a source of survival, protecting the plant from UV rays and attracting insects and bees for pollination. In addition, studies show that betalain pigments support the body#39;s detoxification process, activating and processing unwanted toxic substances. Betalains are not heat-stable, though, so longer cooking times can decrease their presence.
Chard is known to be a nutritional powerhouse vegetable packed with vitamins, nutrients, and health benefits. Rainbow Swiss chard contains high levels of vitamins C, K, E, beta-carotene, and they uptake minerals such as manganese and zinc, and whatever else is in your soil.
Use as a salad green and a leaf vegetable. And as a celery or spinach substitute. It can be used both raw and cooked; cooking will give the leaves a milder flavor.
Rainbow Swiss chard plants thrive in cool summer temperatures but are tolerant of heat and humidity. Thus they are adaptable and easy to grow. If you grow chard as a food crop, you can also share the bounty with humans, rabbits, turtles, tortoises, deer, and birds that will eat the seeds.
