Rainbow Swiss Chard seeds

These are Open-pollinated Rainbow Swiss Chard seeds that were grown in living soil in Aloha Food Forest.

These beauties live for years, multiplying through roots, stems, and seeds.

Description/Taste
You can recognize it by its bouquet of wrinkled, rich green, red, and bronze leaves and brightly colored stems.

The colorful stems and leaves grow upright and tall from a dense rosette. Ribbed stems in various colors, including gold, pink, orange, purple, red, and candy cane striped variations. Earthy, beet-like flavors along with slight notes of salt due to soil content. The leaves are succulent and tender when young. The juicy stems crunch celery and make a substitute for celery in recipes.

Seasons/Availability
Rainbow Swiss chard is available year-round.

Current Facts
Botanical name Beta vulgaris often referred to as leaf beet. They contain the compound betalain, which acts as a source of survival, protecting the plant from UV rays and attracting insects and bees for pollination. In addition, studies show that betalain pigments support the body#39;s detoxification process, activating and processing unwanted toxic substances. Betalains are not heat-stable, though, so longer cooking times can decrease their presence.

Nutritional Value
Chard is known to be a nutritional powerhouse vegetable packed with vitamins, nutrients, and health benefits. Rainbow Swiss chard contains high levels of vitamins C, K, E, beta-carotene, and they uptake minerals such as manganese and zinc, and whatever else is in your soil.

Versatile
Use as a salad green and a leaf vegetable. And as a celery or spinach substitute. It can be used both raw and cooked; cooking will give the leaves a milder flavor.

Geography/History
Rainbow Swiss chard plants thrive in cool summer temperatures but are tolerant of heat and humidity. Thus they are adaptable and easy to grow. If you grow chard as a food crop, you can also share the bounty with humans, rabbits, turtles, tortoises, deer, and birds that will eat the seeds.
