Taro, Kalo, Elephant ear-

Whatever we call it, it’s a big producer of food for a large portion of the world from tropics to temperate zones.

It loves water, so perfect for rain gardens, mitigation of flooding or wet spots in landscaping around our property while at the same time giving us a food source back.

Perfectly suited for Indo-pacific foods, East Asian baked goods, poi, the rest of the plant has uses too as the bracts are used to help build fires or make fire resistant tongs, the leaves to steam meat or fish and as plates or table accents or runners

Little effort made once planted, the real effort is the germination process, which we set into motion, and help along the way; they grow very fast, leaving you the only real work of planning where to place them

They require growing space, water and some soil, mostly the first two.

They do well as companion or cover plants for younger crops in the same circles - often Banana, Palms, Kava, Gingers and their relatives, sweet potatoes, protecting often younger plants too like tropical or subtropical fruit trees as they develop into their own like mango or passionfruit- play around with it, see what works for you! (Id look into some Monstera Deliciosa fruit and taro in similar area for some extra tropical vibes and flavors)

These buddies pair well with lithic mulching, I prefer black lava rock like we’d use in an imu, and work well aesthetically too.

Enjoy your new land and new plants, and many years now to come, Voyager. adventures await!

*Exercise caution with some of these foods and please read up on / learn from others before attempting yourself raw Taro greens can be damaging not toxic but very sharp.
