SCREEN-PRINTED BATIK
This batik fabric is made with a screen printing method that is also called silkscreen printing, serigraphy, and serigraph printing. This method is different from machine printing because it is done manually by people, not machines. Screen printing to make batik fabric is more complicated and takes more time than usual screen printing. In short, hand screen printed batik can be considered handmade. However, for some people, printed batik fabrics, whether it is screen-printed or machine-printed, cannot be considered batik because they do not involve a waxing process. These are the steps needed to make batik cloth with the screen printing method:
1. The designers create a design pattern in which the right and left sides can be connected and.
2. The design is transferred onto a transparent acetate film to create a klise/film.
3. The artisans create a plangkan (mesh screen) by stretching a piece of mesh over a wooden frame. Then, it is coated with a layer of light-reactive emulsion, and the klise/film is laid down on it. A very bright light will harden the emulsion which is not covered by the film. The unhardened emulsion on the screen is rinsed away for the ink to pass through. One plangkan is only for one color. So the artisans need to repeat all the steps above until they have the plangkan for each color.
4. The long fabric (usually it can be 35 meters) is glued on the long flat table so it will not move. The plangkan is laid down at the beginning of the fabric. Ink is added to the top end of the plangkan, and the artisans will swipe the screen back and forth using a rakel/valet (squeegee) to pull the ink along the full length of the screen. The artisans shift to the next section of fabric until the entire fabric is colored with the first color and plangkan. After that, the fabric is left until the ink dries. After the ink dries, the artisans keep repeating the coloring process with the next color and plangkan until the last color and plangkan. The whole process is done very carefully so the design looks seamless.
5. After the dye dries, there is a finishing process that is needed when using certain dyes that require it. The finishing processes include soaking the fabric in a color strengthening solution, and pelorodan. Pelorodan is washing the fabric with hot water after the cloth has been left overnight. After that, the fabric is dried in the sun and ironed until it is neat and ready to use.

WHAT IS BATIK?
Batik is a masterpiece of Indonesian cultural heritage. The word batik comes from the Javanese word ‘Amba’ means ‘to write,’ and ‘Titik’ means little dot or make dots. In a manuscript on a lontar leaf originating from around 1520 AD, which was found in Galuh, South Cirebon, West Java, it is written that the word batik means ‘Seratan,’ which in Javanese means ‘writing.’ On October 2, 2009, Indonesian batik was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Since that, October 2 has become National Batik Day in Indonesia.
Batik is a technique of decorating cloth by applying wax on certain parts and then dyeing the cloth. The wax protects the original color of the cloth during the dyeing process. When the cloth has been dyed as desired, the wax is removed by soaking it in boiling water. The contrast between the dyed and undyed parts forms the pattern. The wax resists process and dyeing process are repeated over and over to create complex multicolored designs. There are three main types of batik cloth based on the making technique:
1. Batik tulis (hand waxed or hand-drawn or handwritten batik) is produced by painting the wax on the cloth using a traditional tool called canting [cha:nting].
2. Batik cap [cha:p] or hand-stamped batik, produced by stamping the wax on the cloth using a copper stamp.
3. Batik kombinasi, which is produced using the first two techniques by using canting and copper stamp.
However, to meet the growing demand for batik cloth and make it more affordable, there is cloth with batik design produced by printed either by hand or machine. Of course, unlike the three main types of batik cloth, printed batik cloth only has a clear pattern and color on one side.
There are almost 6000 batik motifs scattered throughout Indonesia. Each batik motif, especially the traditional ones, has its meaning. Some motifs can only be worn by the king, the royal family, and people with specific roles and positions. These motifs are called batik larangan or Awisan Dalem. The belief in the existence of spiritual power and the philosophical meaning of the batik motifs is one of the reasons behind the presence of the batik larangan. The batik motifs are believed can create a religious atmosphere and emit a magical aura according to the meaning they contain. Therefore, several motifs, especially those with high philosophical values, are declared as batik larangan. The rule is still applied in a limited way within the Yogyakarta Palace, not for the general public outside the palace.

IMPORTANT NOTES
- I do not list all of my collections on Etsy, so you can ask me if I have a fabric with a certain color and pattern design. I will be very happy to help you find the fabric you need and want.
- There is no pattern on handmade batik fabrics that look symmetrical or identical to each other because of the waxing and coloring technique.
- The product’s color may be slightly different due to the photographic effects or your monitor settings.
- Do not be alarmed if you find some black spots that are not part of the pattern. Those are just the remaining dried wax from the making process.
- Please understand that all the hand-drawn, hand-painted, hand-stamped, and hand screen-printed batiks I sell in this shop are handcrafted which means they are not perfect.
